5 Weeks & Jwrnal chooses 5 Craft Festival Favourites and a new Competition from Under The Thatch
We've been following Jwrnal's blog for some time and we were delighted when she agreed to curate an area in Craft Festival Cardiff, celebrating Welsh Wool. We also asked to her to cast her creative eye over the Craft Festival programme and here are her 5 Favourites to discover at City Hall in November
Sian O'Doherty
Sian's knitwear and textiles designed and created from her studio in Pembrokeshire are a brilliant example of sustainable and ethical, slow fashion.
Cardiff Pottery Workshops
Cardiff Pottery Workshops is a Community Interest Company who dedicate their time, facilities and expertise to bringing pottery into the Cardiff community. I just love this concept of using the power of making to bring people together, promote wellbeing and to break barriers in communities such as loneliness, and this is a perfect example.
Heritage Crafts Association
The HCA work to highlight awareness of the Red List of Endangered Crafts in the UK, which I just find fascinating. At Craft Festival Bovey Tracey I met one of the very few reverse glass gold leaf sign-writers and was blown away. Definitely make a detour to find out more about these traditional crafts and show your support
Rubbish Portraits by Lucie Sheridan
I met Lucie at The Good Life Experience in North Wales this year and was instantly won over by her concept; 3 minutes sat in a portable booth before being handed your very own hand-drawn portrait. Turns out they're not rubbish either!
Makers Guild in Wales
The Makers Guild in Wales is a organisation championing craft in Wales. They have a seriously impressive roster of makers on their books so I'm excited to see what products they bring along to the show
Jwrnal is a platform for makers and creatives dedicated to sharing stories from makers and creatives in Wales. Founder Sarah will be bringing along a selection of products made in Wales using Welsh Wool, a series of short films for you to enjoy at your leisure as well as displaying stories from her printed Jwrnal #01. There will also be a big weave structure for everyone to participate in, sponsored by Melin Tregwynt.
Want to learn something new? A trip to Craft Festival wouldn't be complete without having a go at making yourself. The brilliant Make it in Wales have put together a tasty timetable of two hour workshops. Enjoy free-stitch embroidery with Suzi Park, make a leather dog collar with Nia Denman, paper-cutting with Erica Frances George, feltmaking with Ruth Packham and Yarn Art with Llio James. Some workshops are already sold out so BOOK NOW
