Katherine Sorrell, chooses her 5 Favourites from Made by Hand
We asked a number of curators, journalists and influencers to choose their 5 Favourites from Made by Hand, Cardiff. We asked Katherine Sorrell, design journalist and former editor of Homes & Gardens, here are Katherine's Choices:
I love it when something stops me in my tracks and completely surprises me. Jane’s work is unique, clever, appealing and ever so slightly bonkers. A combination of supremely talented embroidery, three-dimensional modelling, vintage crockery and even the odd pom pom. What’s not to like?
I have to admit to a bit of an obsession with small animals, whether ceramic, wood or textiles. But only when (as is not always the case) they avoid the obviously twee and demonstrate a quality that is more arresting and unusual. Suzanne’s paper sculptures are awesome: utterly entrancing and beautiful. I adore her little flowers, too.
Andy Poplar etches vintage glass and the result is clever, funny and occasionally philosophical. His choice of font is perfectly matched to the piece and to the idea. Old and new at the same time. It all seems so simple, but is actually brilliant. Just fab.
I love sea glass: the excitement of the hunt, the colours, the shapes and the possibilities of what can be made from it. Kate’s sea glass jewellery really appeals to me. It’s pretty and wearable, not at all blingy, and each piece is unique. I’m particularly drawn to the combination of pale turquoise with silver.
In an increasingly complex world we all need some quiet minimalism from time to time, and Esther’s work – which I’ve admired for ages – provides just that. It is beautifully observed and ever-so-slightly other-worldly. So skilful and yet, like all the best artists and craftspeople, she makes it look so easy.
We also have a variety of workshops on offer provided by Make it in Wales & Learn Cardiff
