Katie Honnor from madebyhandonline chooses her 5 Favourites
Written: 06 October 2017
We asked Katie Honnor, director of madebyhandonline.com, the UK's leading online platform for the finest British makers to choose her five favourites at Made by Hand, Cardiff
Anne makes exquisite contemporary jewellery from exciting combinations of materials, including silver and gold, precious stones and found materials. It’s a bit of a cliché, but she really does have something for everyone, with styles for different occasions or moods and at different price points. I love wearing her work and her displays are always incredibly inviting.
I love the way Louise manipulates clay to make sculptural forms with such a tactile quality. They really capture the work of the maker’s hands. Her decoration is beautiful. I love the combinations of colours, splash of gold lustre and imprinted lace. I’m looking forward to seeing her collection of plates at the show as I regretted not treating myself at the Contemporary Craft Festival earlier this year!
I’ve known and loved Anya’s work for a long time, yet every single display she creates at every single show I’ve visited stops me in my tracks and makes me smile. Humour’s really important! I love the characters she creates, their names and their imagined histories. They pull at childhood memories and cleverly allow a ‘grown up’ playfulness.
Andy Poplar is another maker who I’ve known and admired for some time, but who continues to create work that surprises and makes me smile and ponder. His etched messages give new life, humour and sentiment to apothecary bottles, decanters and mirrors, creating beautifully contemplative work.
Clare’s recently joined us on madebyhandonline and I’m really looking forward to seeing her at the show. I particularly like her use of printed foil. She has some fantastic linen cushions with rich bronze, silver and gold foil prints and I love her collection of bags. These have simple, bold metallic designs on the outside and beautifully detailed and colourful hand printed linings based on plants and flowers, which to me are like special treats inside for the user.
Meet these makers and all 135 at Made by Hand, City Hall from November 3-5th
