Selvedge Magazine chooses their 5 Favourites from Made by Hand, Cardiff
Written: 18 September 2018
Hugely respected textile magazine, Selvedge acknowledges the significance of textiles as a part of everyone’s story. The pages of Selvedge are meticulously curated, visually stunning and dedicated to finding and nurturing textiles from every angle. Founding Editor, Polly Leonard has cast a very discerning eye over our exhibitors and we'd like to introduce her 5 favourites to you. Meet all these makers at City Hall, Cardiff in November.
Virginia Graham ceramics are an amalgamation of the cups, saucers and teapots that conjure up nostalgic images of afternoon tea with your grandmother, when time seemed to stand still and the summer last for ever. Yet Virginia juxtaposes this familiarity with unexpected combinations of form and pattern and visible joins. In these objects the hand of the maker is celebrated.
Terry Macey is a long time favourite and enjoys a huge following. Angelika Elsebach combines glorious colour and flattering layered shapes to form clothing that is ultimately wearable.
LG Leatherwork creates hand-stitched moulded bags that would add a touch of elegance to the everyday. New to the scene, she’s one to watch.
Cleo Mussi is an established mosaic artist whose work I have followed for thirty years. Her training in textiles is evident in her handling of colour and pattern. Cleo makes good use of recycled materials, from fine porcelain to everyday ceramics
Rhian Wyman
Rhian Wyman brings her sophisticated colour sense to the production of a range of hand-woven throws from her home in the Forest of Dean.
This fair offers the perfect opportunity to treat yourself or do a little early Christmas shopping.
