3 weeks to go and Elaine Dye of The Byre chooses her 5 Festival favourites
I first saw Juliet Macleod’s work in Edinburgh last summer and was really drawn to it. The blues are so redolent of the sea and sky of the Scottish summers I grew up in; just heavenly. I love the balance between form and colour that Juliet achieves and the ‘pop’ of bright shades gives the pieces an extra edge.
I’m a huge fan of glass: I absolutely love the way it responds to light and how a burst of sunshine can bounce through it and throw glorious coloured shadows on the walls and ceiling. At this time of year it is always spring brights that catch my eye so Alice Heaton’s work with its energetic bursts of colour just leapt out at me – I’ll be making a beeline to her stand to see it.
I met Angie and saw her glass at New Designers in London last year and was blown away by the maturity and icy cool elegance of her work. I was so captivated that I didn’t waste any time inviting her to be in The Byre’s summer exhibition, Hidden Depths, and I’m really looking forward to introducing my clients to these fantastic pieces.
The angularity of Imogen’s elegant silver work coupled with the suppleness she achieves in the wooden handles of her spoons really appeals to me. Her style is very contemporary but also timeless, these are true heirloom pieces that I can’t wait to see for myself.
I’ve become more and more of a jewellery fan in recent years – in fact I had to have my ears pierced last year so I could indulge in some of the wonderful work I show at The Byre; well a girl needs earrings to set off her new necklace! I hadn’t come across Lucy Clare’s work before now but the photography of her stunning work had me rushing to look at her website – I’m SO looking forward to spying out some new pieces.
