3 weeks till Made by Hand, Mission Gallery chooses 5 Favourites and profiling the maker of our stag, Helly Powell from Fauxidermy
There is just 3 weeks until Made by Hand and we cannot wait! We asked a number of curators, journalists and influencers to share their 5 Favourites from Made by Hand. We asked Rhian Wyn Stone from The Mission Gallery in Swansea and here are her choices:
A balance between colour, pattern, simplicity of form and function - what's not to like?
Very well put together pieces that capture the imagination - would love to have one of these on my wall!
I have always been drawn to enamelled jewellery and particularly like the sculptural and mark-making elements of these pieces
Eye-catching stained glass pieces made using traditional techniques, the mixture of colour and drawings work so well.

Very much like her combination of jesmonite and resin, I'm particularly drawn to her contrast brooches and crayon resin studs. Fun resin jewellery that would look complement any outfit!
Meet the Maker of our beautiful stag
Somewhere between the rolling Monmouthshire countryside and the wild dramatic lofty peaks of the Brecon Beacons National Park is Helly Powell’s workshop in a tiny stables on an old dairy farm. Helly Powell is the textile artist that made the magnificent stag which we have proudly used to promote Made by Hand this year.
Helly looks to her surroundings near Abergavenny, and the rich literary history of Welsh myth and folklore for the inspiration in creating textile taxidermy sculptures aptly named Fauxidermy. We are delighted that she will be exhibiting with us for the first time at Made by Hand, Cardiff. Helly will also be demonstrating her craft skills on her stand throughout the weekend.
